When I wrote my short story Embodied, available in my Wondering Wanderer collection, it was more of a generalised commentary on the environment and our role in it. It was inspired by one simple phrase a Native American friend had said to me when we were talking about climate change
"The human race cannot destroy the world, not in it's wildest dreams! The Earth, though, She can destroy the human race any time She likes!"
Well then, I wrote a story about Her doing just that but in a slightly different way than one expected. It was simply an experiment in writing for me, an idea I wanted to see if I could thoughtstream and it, as my writing often does, evolved into something else.
I think of my Native friend a lot; he was at Standing Rock, North Dakota and I was not, though I passed through that way many years ago. He stood in the forefront of what he deeply believes to have been a direct struggle for Native rights and for the Earth Herself, a fight he is bitterly disappointed to have, at least for now, lost.
That's not him, he didn't want pictures. A certain government rolled all over the Standing Rock protestor camp with militarised force far in excess of that required for unarmed and mostly peaceful protestors. Our Native brothers and sisters are understandably nowhere near happy with how the government chose to treat them. WE should not be either. The Water Protectors, as they became known, weren't just protecting their water, they were protecting yours too, because if they fail, what comes next? We are all one people, one Earth, they say. What next?
28th Feb. 2017: Trump signs an order to roll back E.P.A Clean Water Act
March 15th 2017: The Trump budget drastically defunds the E.P.A. and it's environmental protection programs.
1st June 2017: Trump rejects the Paris Accords because he claims it'll save America money in the long run.
Well, here's the thing, a lot of people are with him. A lot of people claim that, despite thousands of scientists - people who know what they're doing with this kind of thing - telling us climate change is real (they can't all argue on the rate thereof and what is coming next, that's true) and coming right at us. Look at the severe weather of recent winters to see for yourself. It is already here. It's too late to deny it any more, to do so is morally wrong. Why? Here is why; we are all humans and like as not, humans did this.
You can deny, you can holler, you can deny and blame and claim conspiracy. We did it, we at least contributed. Facts are facts. Truth is truth.
We ALL have a responsibility for change, America (your president is YOUR voice) cannot shirk her responsibility. She pollutes a lot, it cannot be denied and her pollution doesn't just hang around over America, it travels around the world, it's basic science but then, the deniers do not hold truck with that eh?
They claim religious arguments, that God did not mention specifically about climate change and to presume dame to His work is hubris but God did mention it, take it from a Christian who actually reads his Bible;
